Job Description & How to Apply Below
Sem-Sol is seeking a Scientist who brings an energizing combination of experience and character to the table. The scientist we are looking for knows more than just the subject matter - they know how to produce hardware that works reliably in a practical environment. We always have several directed energy system projects running, and their successful completion requires your skill and your professionalism.
We need a self-motivated individual who also has strong organizational and communication skills to work effectively as part of a team. As part of the Sem-Sol team, you will be an innovator at the leading edge where R & D and real-world applications meet.
The preferred candidate will have a strong background in both high power microwave (HPM) source and antenna design. However, candidates who are strong in either area and show a willingness to learn will be seriously considered. High power microwave antennas have the unique challenge that the instantaneous electric field levels approach megavolts per meter over meter size antennas. These field levels cause ionization and subsequent breakdown without careful design.
The successful candidate will be designing antennas that include dielectric windows, reflectors, horns, waveguide components, mode converters, and unique phased arrays. High power microwave source design requires a deep mathematical understanding of principles of electromagnetics and plasma physics, and the ability to incorporate those principles into advanced simulations. Sem-Sol specializes in designing novel HPM sources that work in the laboratory with minimal adjustment.
These sources and antennas are used in prototypes in high visibility demonstrations.
Duties will include:
- Collaborating with other scientists, engineers, technicians, and program managers to develop the next generation of High Power Microwave (HPM) sources and antennas.
- Designing, simulating, and testing HPM sources, antennas, and waveguide components, including directional couplers, mode converters, and filters.
- Performing laboratory measurements and calibrations of microwave components and equipment.
- Presenting work at design reviews and conferences.
- Writing reports to describe simulation results.
- Comparing simulation results to experimental results.
- Writing technical proposals.
- B.S. in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience of working on either HPM or antenna research and development projects.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Experience performing microwave device simulations in CST, ICEPIC, HFSS or similar software.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience of working on HPM projects for either the government or industry.
- Familiarity with performing measurements of microwave components and antennas using equipment such as Vector Network Analyzers, Noise Figure Analyzers, Power Meters, and Near Field Arrays.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or related field.
- Experience working in a research, development, or prototyping environment.
- Experience in writing proposals for competitive solicitations.
- This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
- Active Security Clearance is required or ability to obtain a security clearance.
We offer a competitive salary along with comprehensive medical, dental, vision, 401k, sick leave and PTO.
