The SSHO will be expected to have specialized expertise in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Safety Certification, particularly the EM 385.1.1 standards, and will possess Risk Management Software (RMS) experience. This role plays a key part in creating a safe and environmentally compliant working environment, supporting the readiness of the base, and safeguarding personnel and assets.
Key Responsibilities Safety ManagementDevelop, implement, and manage safety programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with USACE safety standards, including EM 385.1.1.
Conduct frequent safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure alignment with safety protocols.
Lead and manage accident investigations, providing detailed reports with corrective actions and lessons learned.
Ensure all personnel, including contractors, are trained on safety regulations, EM 385.1.1 standards, and emergency response procedures.
Provide expert advice to the command on matters related to occupational safety and accident prevention.
Environmental ComplianceOversee environmental safety programs, ensuring compliance with EPA, local, state, and Air Force regulations.
Manage hazardous materials and waste protocols, ensuring adherence to safety and environmental laws.
Conduct environmental audits, assessments, and inspections to proactively address potential environmental risks.
Liaise with regulatory bodies and manage inspections or audits related to environmental compliance.
Health and WellnessCollaborate with medical personnel to develop health and wellness programs for base employees.
Monitor workplace health risks, providing guidance on exposure prevention, ergonomics, and other health-related issues.
Ensure that health and wellness training programs address both physical and mental health concerns.
Risk ManagementApply Risk Management Software (RMS) to track, report, and mitigate safety and environmental risks across the base.
Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to evaluate potential hazards and provide recommendations for risk reduction.
Assist in the development of emergency response plans and coordinate risk management activities during emergency drills.
Ensure that all risk management documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with relevant standards.
Regulatory ReportingSubmit accurate and timely reports to Air Force and external agencies in relation to safety and environmental issues.
Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, hazard assessments, training sessions, and incidents.
Ensure compliance with all reporting requirements, including incident reports and environmental impact assessments.
Training and DevelopmentDevelop and deliver safety, health, and environmental training programs, specifically on EM 385.1.1 standards and USACE regulations.
Maintain continuous training schedules to ensure all personnel are kept up to date with regulatory changes and safety protocols.
Utilize RMS tools to track employee training records, ensuring that certifications are up-to-date and that personnel are qualified for specific safety responsibilities.
Stakeholder EngagementServe as the primary point of contact for safety and environmental matters within the Air Force Base.
Work collaboratively with other departments to identify and address safety and environmental concerns.
Engage with external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach to safety and environmental protection.
Qualifications EducationBachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
USACE SSHO Certification is required. Additional certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)) are a plus.
ExperienceMinimum of 5 years of experience in safety, health, or environmental management, with significant experience in military or government environments.
Expertise in EM 385.1.1 standards, including applying these standards to workplace safety and environmental management.
Demonstrated experience with Risk Management Software (RMS) and risk assessment tools.
