This position will be with the District Lab Department.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?
The Lead Engineering Technician position is an advanced role with complex duties under limited supervision. Incumbent performs Independent Assurance Testing and inspection of construction project materials to ensure compliance with NMDOT and FHWA requirements and specifications. Incumbent is responsible for distribution and maintenance of Nuclear Gauge Devices. This position may serve as a senior worker, lead field inspector, and/or a laboratory technician.
How does it get done?
The key responsibilities for this position includes the process and duties of distribution and maintenance of Nuclear Gauge Devices, which is accomplished by adhering to NMED specifications and requirements NUREG-1556 V1 REV 2, maintain laboratory files for each construction project ensuring compliance, quality control and IA testing frequencies for contract specifications, record written documentation of all deficiencies in materials, testing, samples, etc.,
and report results to Project Engineer/Project Manager/DLS, and assists with construction personnel immediately. Incumbent will be required to visit active project sites to ensure materials and testing are in compliance, reviews project plans, contracts, and specifications, confirms IA testing is completed, samples and test materials utilized in projects are compliant under the AASHTO, ASTM, TTCP, AND department procedures. Other responsibilities incorporate training to other technicians for material testing, assists DLS with radiation safety training for field technicians, support in-house equipment calibrations/verifications of lab equipment, and participate in the State Materials Bi-annual Lab Inspection.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following experience in:
- Field and Lab testing for collection of samples for roadway materials according to AASHTO, ASTM, & TTCP procedures.
- Quality Control (QC) and IA testing.
- Road construction projects inspections & operations.
- Nuclear Gauge Devices distribution and maintenance.
- NMED specifications and requirements.
- Radiation Safety Officer Certification.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of a post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Will be required to obtain Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to Nuclear Densometer, Radiation Safety Officer Training, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations;
