JOB DESCRIPTION:
We have a Controls Engineer position available in our Albuquerque, NM office. This person will provide team leadership in delivering automation systems for a wide variety of industries.
This position requires demonstrated technical proficiency in implementing automation solutions with PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms. The Senior Controls Engineer will interact directly with the customer and lead a team of Wunderlich-Malec engineers in identifying requirements, developing specifications, and implementing/testing/commissioning/qualifying automation solutions. This position is a leadership role within the business unit and requires strong problem-solving ability, well-balanced people skills, an aptitude for business efficiency, and an interest in creating partnerships.
The Senior Controls Engineer demonstrates success by securing repeat work with both new and existing customers.
- Deliver innovative automation solutions and design standards either self-directedly or as a leader of a team.
- Conceptualize, detail, and implement control systems for industrial processes and machinery that meet customer requirements.
- Develop a control system architecture, select components, detail schematic diagrams and system documentation.
- Program controllers (PLC, DCS, RTU), program process visualization (HMI/SCADA), develop databases for archiving/displaying historical data, and implement/commission the control system at the client’s facility.
- Utilize controller programming languages such as Ladder, Sequential Function Chart, Structured Text, and others; apply standard programming languages such as VBA, .NET, and SQL for HMI/SCADA development (preferred).
- For larger systems, work with industrial networking to connect control system components and instrumentation (preferred).
- Design, detail, and implement fiber, wired, and wireless systems using industrial protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.).
- Perform project management tasks: developing execution plans, work breakdown structures, budgets, prioritization, scheduling, time and financial tracking, risk management, and status reporting. Oversee daily operations of projects up to $1M and help ensure overall profitability.
- Act as technical lead on projects, guide lower-level engineers/technicians, and potentially serve as Project Manager on smaller projects.
- Education – Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science is required.
- Experience – 10+ years of Controls Engineer experience with capabilities in the areas listed below.
- Candidates with Rockwell and Cimplicity experience will be given preference.
- Experience with various 3rd party web-based data integrations for monitoring and troubleshooting aid.
- Develop work processes to automate template and instance development within the System Platform.
- Provide technical leadership on design standards around graphics, alarming, and scale-up.
- SQL, .NET, Power BI, Grafana, and APIs.
- In-depth understanding of PLC hardware/software platforms (Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Modicon).
- In-depth understanding of HMI/SCADA platforms (ICONICS Genesis
64, Wonderware ArchestrA System Platform, GE CIMPLICITY, GE iFIX, Rockwell Factory Talk View, Schneider, Siemens). - In-depth understanding of DCS platforms (Emerson DeltaV or similar).
- Experience in industries such as Semiconductor fabrication, Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food and Beverage, Oil & Gas, and Mining.
- Experience in electrical schematics design, including power distribution under 480
VAC, control panels, and NEC references desired. - Experience with AutoCAD is desired.
- Experience leading a team of engineers/technicians and mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Professional references, preferably one from a subordinate, a peer, and a manager.
- Field device/equipment troubleshooting and job estimating.
Seeing, color perception, hearing, clear speech, dexterity in hands, driving, lifting, ability to mount/dismount equipment, pushing and pulling.
