Salary ranges vary by location as follows:
Albuquerque: GS-7/9/11 – $51,007 to $98,141
Las Cruces: GS-7/9/11 – $50,460 to $97,087
Norman: GS-7/9/11 – $50,460 to $97,087

Duties
  • Manage an operational risk management program for the District and/or Field Office.
  • Utilize and review public accident statistics, law enforcement case reports, and employee/supervisor reports to investigate serious or recurring visitor accidents and develop plans to reduce these incidents.
  • Conduct formal and informal training sessions on basic safety concepts, design features, and specifications.
  • Write and publish safety articles on a variety of subjects covering several occupational trades, activities, or processes.
  • Investigate job accidents, analyze data to determine root causes, and provide information to management on mitigation strategies.
  • Review engineering and hazardous waste cleanup project proposals for compliance with applicable safety and health standards.
Physical Demands

Field inspections and investigations require frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and off‑road travel. Office work is primarily sedentary.

Working Conditions

Time is split between office work and field activities such as inspecting facilities or investigating accidents. The incumbent may encounter a wide range of climatic and travel conditions, including the use of small aircraft or helicopters, and may be exposed to hazardous materials and remote environments. Personal protective equipment such as hard hats, eye and hearing protection, respirators, and protective footwear is required.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Hold a valid state driver’s license.
  • No active real estate license or interest in firms with interests in federal lands.
  • Background and suitability investigation must be completed favorably.
  • Direct deposit for pay is required.
  • Probationary or trial periods may apply.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the qualification requirements for the applicable GS grade (GS‑07, GS‑09, or GS‑11) as set forth below. Specialized experience and education are combined to meet each grade level’s requirement.

GS‑07
  • One year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑05 in federal service, including safety inspections, report preparation, investigation assistance, or informal training.
  • Or, at least one year of graduate‑level education in safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • Or, a combination of education and experience totaling 100% of the requirement.
GS‑09
  • One year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑07 in federal service, including conducting safety inspections, leading incident reviews, surveying hazards, and providing safety training.
  • Or, a master’s degree or two years of graduate education in a related field.
  • Or, a combination of education and experience totaling 100% of the requirement.
GS‑11
  • One year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑09 in federal service, including advising on safety programs, developing standards, leading investigations, fostering a safety culture, and training personnel.
  • Or, a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.
  • Or, a combination of education and experience totaling 100% of the requirement.
