Health Physicist - Mid-Level

Health Physicist – Full‑time, Mid‑Level – Albuquerque, NM (Non‑remote)

• Perform preliminary site assessments (PA), site inspections (SI), removal site evaluations (RSE), and expanded site inspections (ESI) on sites with radionuclide and non‑radioactive hazardous substances.
• Operate and oversee field teams and be familiar with field equipment, including radiation instrumentation, for site assessment and radiation health surveys.
• Recommend adaptations and modifications of scientific or engineering methods using independent judgment.

• Possess or have strong desire to learn and implement complex radiological monitoring techniques and site characterization studies.
• Perform field work in remote rugged terrain.
• Direct and implement Multi‑Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) 2 guidance.

• BS in Engineering (nuclear, civil, or environmental) or Health Physics.
• Minimum 6+ years of practical scientific or environmental engineering work experience in performing the responsibilities listed above; or 2 years of practical experience if possessing a master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
• Knowledge and experience of MARSSIM.

• Experience with radioactive contamination.
• Ability to learn calculations for radiation exposure limits for workers, safe work methods, and decontamination.
• Experience with abandoned mine sites.
• Experience in environmental remediation, mining and mine reclamation, uranium mining and mills, interaction with regulatory agencies, tribal lands, CERCLA sites.
• Construction or construction oversight experience.
• Experience working with Principal Threat Waste (PTW).
• Familiarity with naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) or technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) in uranium mining, oil and gas, or other industries.
• Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Health Physics (CHP), or other similar certification.
• 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER training.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to lead small sampling teams without direct supervision.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience using computer software including word processing, Minitab, ProUCL, spreadsheet, and database programs.

• Primarily office work; occasional (35%) travel and field work.
• Field work in Arizona and New Mexico.
• Physical capacity required for working outdoors in isolated remote areas.

• Work outdoors in all weather conditions, both hot and cold.
• Walk on uneven terrain.
• Work in variable outdoor environments, pack heavy equipment, and perform excavations using hand tools.
• Carry field equipment (35–40 lbs).
• Don personal protective gear as needed.
• Must be able to drive regularly; passing a motor‑vehicle‑record background check and maintaining a valid driver’s license and safe‑driving record is required.

• Work schedule:
  
  Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm.
• Night/weekend requirements:
  Periodic travel with overnight accommodations; working nights and weekends may be required during field work activities.
• Work location:
  
  Albuquerque, NM office; hybrid schedule is available.
• Travel requirements: 35 %.
