Senior/Principal Computer Aided Design Technologist - Design Engineering, Onsite
Sandia National Laboratories is a leading science and engineering laboratory focused on national security. This role invites talented designers to transform conceptual ideas into detailed design solutions that support advanced research and national defense initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Design, modify, and evaluate detailed component and system definitions using advanced CAD tools.
- Create 3‑D models and drawings of complex mechanical systems and assemblies.
- Develop detailed product specifications, ensuring clarity, precision, and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with clients, CAD designers, product engineers, and research teams to integrate requirements into design solutions.
- Lead design teams and mentor junior designers.
- Perform mass‑properties calculations, tolerancing, interference analysis, and other quality‑engineering tasks.
- Interpret evolving requirements and refine designs with R&D engineers.
- Collect and analyze product performance data, driving continuous improvement.
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (or equivalent) plus 3 years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency with CAD software for complex 3‑D modeling and mechanical drawing generation.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q‑level security clearance.
- Active DOE Q clearance.
- Experience with PTC Creo for large assemblies.
- Experience with AutoCAD and other CAD platforms.
- Demonstrated application of mechanical design principles and tolerance analysis (GD&T).
- ASME GDTP Senior certification or equivalent.
- Experience with product‑data‑management systems.
- Familiarity with design‑for‑manufacturing/assembly (DFMA) principles.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently in a diverse team setting.
- Previous lead‑designer role and mentoring experience.
- Technical expertise and reputation for solving complex mechanical design problems.
Salary Range: $74,700 - $144,400 (actual salary based on experience and geographic differential)
