GMCCEE Lab Assistant Responsibilities

Under indirect supervision, provide technical assistance in the application of civil engineering principles, methods, and techniques. Conduct materials tests and measurements according to prescribed methodology and procedural guidelines. Conduct field inspections, collect and prepare samples for testing. Oversee and coordinate laboratory and testing facilities, equipment, and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

UNM student with 1 to 3 years of experience obtained through engineering classes, training, or work experience in directly related duties. Student must be at the Freshman, Junior, Senior, or Graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineering core curriculum courses:
    Math 120, College Algebra, College Calculus, English 102, Sociology, Mechanics, Engineering Design, General Physics, Engineering Statics.
  • Record maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices gained through at least 2 years of education or work experience.
  • Skill in using personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to conduct field inspections, surveys, and measurements for civil engineering projects.
  • Ability to write reports containing technical information.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain sample testing equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
  • Ability to devise non-standard materials testing methods and procedures for civil engineering projects.
  • Skill in collecting, analyzing, verifying, and manipulating research data.
  • Ability to coordinate and maintain civil engineering laboratory protocols, procedures, equipment, and facilities.
  • Knowledge of data collection techniques.
  • Ability to train and supervise students in laboratory operations.
