Position Summary
The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller (Financial Services) is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University. It ensures compliance with all financial policies and regulations, including state and federal audit requirements, and oversees the maintenance of official financial records.
Within Financial Services, the Contract & Grant Accounting department has an exciting opportunity for an Accountant 3. The department’s mission is to provide professional expertise and quality customer service on externally sponsored funding, interpret and implement UNM policies related to contracts and grants, and oversee invoicing and revenue collection for funding.

What we’re seeking: a proactive self‑starter with strong interpersonal skills, exceptional organization, ability to juggle multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain a sharp eye for detail. Excellent verbal and written communication, customer service orientation, flexibility, and ability to work independently are essential.
Key Responsibilities- Verify set‑up of new sponsored projects in the pre‑award and accounting systems and monitor regularly.
- Handle cash management, including timely submission of monthly invoices.
- Interpret compliance requirements from multiple funding sources and monitor ongoing award compliance.
- Provide customer service to UNM research community by assisting faculty and department administrators.
- Submit financial and non‑technical reporting to agencies accurately and on time.
- Close awards in a timely fashion at the conclusion of a sponsored project period of performance.
Bachelor’s degree and at least 15 credit hours of university‑level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution above the minimum education requirement can be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or BBA with accounting emphasis.
- Experience with research administration.
- Experience working with UNM financial programs such as MyReports and Banner.
- Effective time‑management skills to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks and meet deadlines.
- Experience communicating effectively at different organizational levels, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience researching and analyzing to investigate discrepancies or questions.
- Experience in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare reports.
- Experience learning, understanding, and applying University, Federal, State, and Agency policies and terms and conditions.
Salary range is estimated and will be determined after consideration of experience and qualifications.
This position qualifies for a hybrid or remote schedule based on experience and demonstrated ability to work remotely. Otherwise, the expectation is onsite Monday‑Friday 8 am‑5 pm during the trial period or probation.
