Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Pretrial Services Supervisor and/or Pretrial Services Lead Worker, the Background Intake Officer works within the AOC Background Investigation and Public Safety Assessment Unit in Albuquerque, NM. The role provides critical background investigation reports and Public Safety Assessment outcomes to courts statewide. Responsibilities include receiving and responding to correspondence from detention centers and courts, updating daily logs, initiating cases in Odyssey, performing NCIC criminal history checks, screening criminal backgrounds of individuals arrested statewide and considered for early delegated release, and other duties as assigned.
Shift differential of $3 per hour applies for hours between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.; evening, weekend, holiday, inclement‑weather shifts may be required.
Job Duties
- Complete full background investigation reports using state and federal criminal justice databases.
- Access national criminal history via the NCIC database following all protocols.
- Communicate with local jails and courts as needed.
- Participate in and provide input during meetings with court staff and others.
- Determine and verify identities of offenders in court or custody.
- Compile and report statistical data.
- Attend conferences, training, and community outreach related to court programs.
- Contact and interview victims, making recommendations for release.
- Document all interactions with offenders in the case‑management system and maintain current case files.
- Prepare accurate written reports including chronological criminal history, conditions of release, treatment referrals, and future recommendations.
- Attend court proceedings as necessary and present information to the court.
- Interview offenders to obtain and verify background information for thorough investigations.
- Provide detailed reports to the court with release recommendations and referrals to community treatment providers.
- Complete the Public Safety Assessment (PSA) using criminal history and department policy to provide release recommendations to judges.
- Register defendants for the court date reminder system, identify defendants for early release, provide court date information, and gather general information.
- Assess offenders’ threat level to self and others.
- Develop detailed offender behavioral profiles by contacting references and verifying employment, home, work, and school status.
- Other duties as assigned.
The successful applicant should demonstrate knowledge of:
- Conditions of release for defendants in custody and third‑party releases; community safety concerns; recidivism.
- Safety, security, and confidentiality practices; criminal behavior patterns and profiles; investigative techniques and interviewing procedures;
New Mexico law, civil and criminal procedure, sentencing guidelines; court rules, policies, procedures, operations, and structure. - Misdemeanor and felony arraignment proceedings; bail and bond processes; court supervision programs; case management; legal terminology.
- Substance abuse and mental health counseling and treatment; drug screening methods; mediation techniques and conflict resolution.
- NCIC procedures and processes;

Work is performed in an office or court setting. A valid driver’s license and travel may be required. The schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Employees must interact positively with co‑workers, clients, the public, judges, and justices.
