Description:

This job is for the Department of Workforce Solutions Public Works/Labor Relations Division. Public Works enforces and administers both the Public Works Minimum Wage Act and the Public Works Apprenticeship and Training Act.
Interviews will take place within 2 weeks of posting closing.

Why does the job exist?

The Public Works Inspector position purpose is to ensure that public works projects are constructed in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards.

How does it get done?

Conduct on-site inspections of public works construction sites to verify compliance with prevailing wage, minimum wage, and other relevant labor laws. Observe work activities, interview workers, and gather basic information regarding wages, hours worked, and working conditions. Collect and document evidence of compliance or non-compliance, such as time cards, payroll records, and employee interviews. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all inspections conducted.

Report findings and observations to the relevant Compliance Officer for further investigation.

The job is done for state and local government agencies, contractors, plaintiffs, and the general public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate:

  • must have experience in construction fields such as commercial, residential, or civil.
  • must be willing to travel extensively throughout the state of New Mexico.
  • conduct independent, on-site inspections with minimal supervision.
  • Effectively interview workers, gather accurate information, and document findings clearly. Investigate potential violations of applicable labor laws, rules, or standards with objectivity and professionalism.
  • Be a self-starter, able to manage workload, deadlines, and priorities without close oversight.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, including clear explanation of findings, requirements, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor with customers, workers, employers, and the general public-even in challenging or confrontational situations.
  • Be well-organized, efficient, and detail-oriented in documentation, case notes, and follow-up activities.
  • Ideally be bilingual in English and Spanish, or be comfortable and effective using telephonic language interpretation services.

High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is mostly performed on Construction sites with exposure to (dirt, mud, construction material) and Vehicle. Office equipment to include a computer, phone, printer, fax machine, and other items similar in nature and function. THIS POSITION INVOLVES INTENSIVE TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO. Overnight stay may be required to fulfill operational responsibilities.
