Position Summary

The University of New Mexico’s College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administrative Sciences is currently recruiting for an undergraduate student to work in the laboratory of Dr. Amer El Ghali. The student will be working in a lab specializing in microbiology and infectious diseases.

Under direct supervision, the Lab Tech will be responsible for taking care of the laboratory including cleaning, equipment supervision, preparing media and supplies, and setting up lab experiments for specified research projects. Further duties may include fabrication of research/testing components, preparing specimens, media, and equipment, and making drug formulations, as appropriate to the specific position. May work with and assist other students in lab activities, and may perform miscellaneous administrative duties.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Prepares various test specimens and growth media for use in microbiology
  • Prepares formulations for use in lab experiments and for collaborators. This includes formulation of antibiotics and bacteriophage preparations
  • Learns and sets up equipment for use in labs; ensures proper operation of equipment, and reports operating deficiencies to supervisor
  • Assists other students in lab experimentation, as appropriate; provides guidance in learning and/or functional operation of experiments and equipment
  • Cleans lab facilities and equipment after lab experiments are complete;
    Stores supplies and equipment as applicable
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods
  • Work on independent projects as discussed by the supervisor
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
  • Work Hours

    Typical work hours will be Monday‑Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Work schedules are flexible and will be worked out with the supervisor before beginning employment. The selected candidate may work up to 20 hours per week
