Responsibilities

In this role you will support and assist the surgeons by preparing and providing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the Operating Room. You will work under the supervision of the surgeon and facilitate a safe, effective and orderly operating room to maximize patient safety. You must also be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of various equipment, procedures and supplies.
  • Adhere to proper surgical procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment.
  • Perform instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintain an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments during the procedure.
  • Secure and prepare all supplies and instruments required for surgical intervention before procedures.
  • Ensure the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR.
  • Prepare patient skin for surgical treatment.
  • Position and re-position patient during surgery.
  • Help monitor patients during surgery.
  • Provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
  • Perform scrub functions.
  • Ensure that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.
  • Maintain current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively.
  • Keep current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops and publications.
  • Follow all federal, state and departmental safety procedures.
Skills

Scrub various types of basic surgical procedures: general, OB/gyn & urology.

Qualifications
  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • HS Diploma or GED plus short-term training in operating room setting.
  • Graduate of surgical technician certification from an accredited school or training program required.
  • Current BLS required at time of hire.
  • Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Minimum of 2+ years experience in a hospital or outpatient operating room if not from an accredited training program.
