Asst Radiation Safety Officer Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) Radiation Safety Office is seeking a results-driven professional to join our team as an Assistant Radiation Safety Officer.

The Radiation Safety team is responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals using ionizing radiation at the UNM campus and in other locations where these items may be used by University faculty and staff. Our objective is the protection of people and the environment from unnecessary exposure to radiation. We accomplish this by providing a radiation protection program to the University community which is compliant with both Federal and State radiation protection regulations.

The successful individual selected for this position will be responsible to:

Responsibilities
  • Management of UNM personnel monitoring and bioassay programs. Ensure staff members are provided appropriate dosimetry. Calculate radiation doses to workers resulting from intakes of radioactive material. Counsel declared pregnant workers. Compile an annual summary of the employee radiation doses resulting from intakes of radioactive material. Investigate intakes of radioactive material exceeding investigation levels and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage the audit program for research laboratories. Generate quarterly audit summaries detailing the progress of the laboratory survey program and the status of radiation safety and compliance in research laboratories and present results to the UNM Radiation Control Committee.
  • Manage UNM radiation safety clinical audit program, which includes auditing all clinical areas including offsites using radioactive materials. Generate quarterly reports and present results to the UNM Radiation Control Committee.
  • Support UNM Radiation Control Committees and subcommittees in their duties.
  • Manage UNM radioactive effluent evaluation program for the release of radioactive material to the environment.
  • Manage UNM radioactive waste programs. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for disposing radioactive waste.
  • Manage UNM radioactive gauge, generally licensed device, and sealed source inventory and leak test programs.
  • Manage UNM radiation safety training programs. Develop and implement online training modules.
  • Manage UNM survey meter calibration programs. Ensure that all equipment is calibrated at the frequency specified in UNM’s radioactive material license and x-ray registrations.
  • Manage UNM patient therapy support program. Provide health physics support for radiation therapies conducted at UNM.
  • Manage radiation permit and research protocol programs. Manage the submission, review, revision, and support of permits and research protocols using ionizing radiation sources.
  • Manage radioactive material shipping.
  • Manage UNM laboratory closeout survey and equipment clearance programs.
  • Manage decommissioning projects.
  • Manage the maintenance and upgrades of the radiation safety database.
  • Respond and manage radiological emergencies.
  • Assist Radiation Safety Officer with radioactive material license amendments and shielding designs and evaluations.
  • Serve on UNM committees that require radiation safety expertise (IACUC, RSAC, EOC, etc.).
  • Process Authorized User and Authorized Medical Physicist applications for review by the Radiation Safety Officer and UNM Radiation Control Committee.
  • Act as contact for any radiological incidents and external agency inspections concerning radioactive material usage or radiation safety.
  • Manage radiation safety staff as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post‑offer, pre‑employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of direct experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
