Why does the job exist?

Disease investigation and other public health responses to STD and HIV are driven by surveillance and epidemiological data. This position will coordinate and help prioritize activities for the team of STD Surveillance Coordinators in the STD Program. Duties include ensuring appropriate reporting of cases of all reportable STDs including syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. This reporting comes from both clinical providers and laboratories follow state legal and policy mandates, using both electronic means and case reporting forms.

Data will be reviewed on an ongoing basis to identify missing or incorrect information, so there can be follow-up with providers in the form of surveillance calls and on-site educational visits. This position will also have a lead role in generating reports for surveillance purposes from the STD Patient Reporting Investigation Surveillance Manager (PRISM) database system.

How does it get done?

This position will be responsible for:

  • Generate STD surveillance reports from the STD PRISM database system to identify STD surveillance data from clinical providers and laboratories and ensure that they follow state legal and policy mandates, and that data is complete and correct. (30%)
  • Ensure that data on new cases is shared with regional Disease Prevention Teams (DPT) for follow-up. Respond to regional questions and data needs related to surveillance information, particularly for more complex cases such as maternal and congenital syphilis.
  • Prioritize and schedule in-person and virtual STD surveillance educational visits for the team. Coordinate follow up and review data to assess improvements in appropriate clinical treatment of STD (most notably correct treatment of gonorrhea) and timely, accurate and complete reporting of STD. Mentors and trains other surveillance staff and DPT staff in these duties and roles, including effective means of communication and training with clinical providers/practices.
  • Utilize STD surveillance reports generated in PRISM to establish statewide priorities for surveillance and educational visits based on both areas/providers with high STD disease morbidity and those that have reporting issues. Coordinate statewide staff to conduct visits, including surveillance staff of the STD Program and regional Disease Prevention Teams (DPT).
