DCI Donor Services operates three organ procurement/tissue recovery organizations:
New Mexico Donor Services, Sierra Donor Services, and Tennessee Donor Services. We also maximize the gift of life through the DCI Donor Services Tissue Bank and Sierra Donor Services Eye Bank.
The In‑house Organ Recovery Coordinator is responsible for providing support for organ donation activities within the assigned facility/facilities to maximize opportunities for organ donation. The Coordinator works with potential donor families, hospital personnel and transplant hospitals to facilitate efficient recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation, ensuring excellent donor evaluation, management, and organ yield. This position collaborates with medical, nursing and other departments in the planning, design, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of educational and quality assurance programs related to donation.
The Coordinator also assists with public education and outreach projects.
- Perform daily responsibilities to meet the needs of potential donors, donor families, hospital personnel, physicians and the OPO; provide rapid on‑site response to referrals.
- Evaluate potential donors, assess donor families, obtain appropriate authorization for donation, conduct medical/social history interviews, and assist donor families through end‑of‑life decisions and family meetings.
- Manage donors prior to recovery activities, direct placement of anatomical gifts, provide transplant surgeons with information necessary to determine appropriate recipients, coordinate and assist in surgical recovery of organs and perioperative management of the donor.
- Coordinate organ placement/organ allocation with transplant programs and surgeons; provide information necessary to determine medical suitability of organs in accordance with regulations and company policy. Coordinate with tissue services as appropriate to facilitate tissue recovery.
- Assist in arranging transportation for organ recovery teams; coordinate surgical recovery/packaging and arrange transportation of organs for transplant and/or research; manage lab specimens for shipment and delivery to laboratories.
- Provide support to the Hospital Development Coordinator to identify formal and informal leaders, assess their roles and influence, and use their expertise to improve and promote donation. Assist in policy and procedure development and act as an expert clinical resource for the hospital regarding organ and tissue donation.
- Participate in decision‑making programs and committees in the hospital that influence organ donation, promoting donation and seeking opportunities for further collaboration. Facilitate the donation process.
- Maintain high visibility by conducting rounds to all critical care units, functioning as the designated resource for all issues related to organ donation, and provide donor and referral follow‑up to appropriate hospital staff.
- In partnership with the In‑house Donation Specialist (when applicable) develop, provide and evaluate in‑house training and in‑service educational programs for hospital staff; collect and report donation outcome data; document hospital activities, update plans, goals, and critical issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
