A medical director position exists in a substance use treatment facility to ensure that care is clinically safe, legally compliant, and medically appropriate. This role oversees medical providers with various licenses, including mid-level practitioners, specialists in different medical fields, and pharmacy staff. The position also requires familiarity with NMAC regulations, Medical By-Laws, and accreditation standards.
How does it get done?Responsible for all patient medical care and services at Turquoise Lodge Hospital, with remote oversight of other substance use facilities. Enforces Department of Health medical policies and supervises all providers at Turquoise Lodge Hospital, including managing medication variance processes.
Who are the customers?Adult individuals who are struggling with substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders throughout the state of New Mexico. The role serves patients, staff, and the broader healthcare community overseeing quality and safety.
Ideal Candidate- Experience working with adults who have substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders in a hospital setting.
- Experience prescribing, ordering, and interpreting test results, continuity of treatment, rehabilitation, discharge planning/programming, and services and activities to ensure effective and timely processes in evaluations.
- Involvement and implementation of corrective action in all cases of patient and/or staff abuse. High-risk behaviors (e.g., assault/suicidal behavior) and other significant/sentinel events.
- Supervision of staff and working in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
- Requires a license to practice medicine in New Mexico and Psychiatrist, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, or Emergency Medicine Board Certification.
- Must possess an active controlled substance license and DEA registration in New Mexico and six (6) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
- Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.
- Position is designated safety sensitive.
- Must successfully complete post-offered preemployment criminal records background check conditional upon results.
- Employment is subject to preemployment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and successfully complete HIPAA training.
Work is performed in a specialty hospital for substance use disorders. Exposure to visual/video display terminals (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Long periods of walking, sitting, standing, bending, and lifting to 50 pounds may be required. Exposure to potentially violent patients in a volatile situation. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. Some travel may be required to other facilities (New Mexico Rehabilitation Center in Roswell and Epi-Duran in Las Vegas).
