What Your Job Will Be Like
Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering, for our Enterprise IT Tools & Services Department (9762). Our department engineers and delivers software‑intensive capabilities for Network Information, Cross Domain Solutions, Email Encryption, Endpoint Software Deployment Testing and Software Asset Management.
The preferred candidate brings broad experience leading applied engineering and technology development, exercises sound judgment, and has a proven record of influencing stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable mission capabilities. They use modern software practices and responsibly leverage AI‑enabled tools to boost developer productivity, improve software quality, and accelerate delivery while meeting cybersecurity, data‑privacy, and mission requirements.
We design, build, and transition mission‑relevant enterprise capabilities using disciplined engineering and an innovation mindset. We adopt new technologies to strengthen security and resiliency and improve service delivery across Sandia and the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
On any given day, you might be called on to:
- Lead software engineering design, implementation, and support teams to deliver the next generation of the Network Information System (NWIS), Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), Deployment Testing, Software Asset Management, and S/PKI Energy Global Directory Services strategies.
- Oversee NWIS;
Sandia’s DDI (DHCP, DNS, and IP Address Management system);
Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) program management; CDS;
Integrated Solutions; and other specialized IT products and services. Promote adoption of appropriate, compliant AI‑enabled capabilities in the software development lifecycle where they provide clear benefit. - Build consensus and trusted partnerships across IT and Cybersecurity (and other groups at Sandia), often influencing without formal authority, to deliver mission outcomes securely and effectively.
- Represent the department in briefings and presentations to senior internal leaders and external stakeholders (e.g., NNSA/DOE), communicating strategy, risks, and outcomes clearly and credibly.

Salary Range$163,700 - $278,000
* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- An active DOE Q-level security clearance is required to start; or equivalent, such as SCI or DOD Top Secret. The selected candidate may be required to obtain and maintain additional clearances, including SCI, as needed.
The ideal Manager, R&D Science and Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
