Position Summary
Student Data Center Specialists are responsible for data center support including cable management, server support, inventory support, and general organization and cleanliness of the IT data centers. Specialists also provide support by maintaining diagrams, documents, and spreadsheets for the data center and other virtualization and storage services.
Duties and Responsibilities- Running new cables and removing old cables.
- Labeling cables and documenting cable connectivity.
- Testing cables for reuse/disposal.
- Mounting/removing servers in racks.
- Connecting/disconnecting power and network cables.
- Configuring remote management connections.
- Documenting additions, changes, and removals of servers in the VIS documentation repository/wiki and CMDB system (Cherwell).
- Surplus Preparation (Storage removal and disk wiping).
- Document inventory status changes in VIS documentation repository and UNM inventory system (App Tree).
- Audit data center systems bi-annually and investigating differences between visual inventory, UNM inventory system, and VIS Documentation.
- Develop new and modify existing documents in repository using MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
- Create and modify diagrams using Visio/Lucid Chart.
- Migrate and organize document repository.
- Strong writing and organizational communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Available 14 – 28 hours per week, ideally between 8am and 6pm Monday through Friday.
- During Summer Sessions, students can work up to 40 hours per week.
- Strong analytical skills to help staff resolve technical problems with server deployment in data center.
- Strong attention to detail skills to ensure correct connectivity and labeling of cables to potential Production services.
- Work split between office environment and data center environment.
- Appropriate office attire required with recommended light jacket/sweater for long periods working in data center.
- Limited physical effort required (lifting up to 50 lbs).
- Periods of work on 8-foot ladder to work in cable runs.
- May require accessing and looking under underneath raised floors.
