Position Summary

Student Data Center Specialists provide support for data center infrastructure, including cable management, server support, inventory management, and maintaining documentation and diagrams for the IT data centers. They also support virtualization and storage services.

Responsibilities
  • Cable management operations: Run and remove cables, label them, document connectivity, and test cables for reuse or disposal.
  • Server support operations: Mount and remove servers in racks, connect and disconnect power and network cables, configure remote management connections, and document additions, changes, and removals in the VIS documentation repository, wiki, and Cherwell CMDB.
  • Inventory support: Prepare surplus by removing storage and wiping disks, document inventory status changes in VIS and UNM inventory system (App Tree), and audit data center systems bi‑annually to investigate discrepancies between visual inventory, the inventory system, and VIS documentation.
  • VIS documentation repository operations: Develop and modify documents using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, create and modify diagrams with Visio or Lucid Chart, and migrate and organize the document repository.
Qualifications
  • Strong writing and organizational communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work in office and data center environments, wearing appropriate office attire and a light jacket or sweater for extended periods in the data center.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, use an 8‑foot ladder for cable runs, and access spaces under raised floors.
  • Available 14–28 hours per week, ideally between 8 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday; up to 40 hours during Summer Sessions.
  • Strong analytical and attention‑to‑detail skills to resolve technical problems in server deployment and ensure correct connectivity and labeling of cables for production services.
Work Environment

Split between office and data center. Light jacket or sweater recommended for long periods in the data center.
