IT Database Administrator (CYFD/ITD #30348)

Install, configure, upgrade, administer, monitor, and maintain operationally efficient databases. Experience and knowledge in administration and in developing new dashboards or report development in the various platforms like Power BI, Power BI Administration, and cloud databases such as Azure SQL Server. This position will manage, secure, and optimize an organization's data infrastructure and ensure data integrity, performance, and availability, often supporting high‑tech innovation and critical systems.

does it get done?

Database Design & Implementation:
Working with developers to design database structures, tables, and views, and capacity planning with estimating future storage needs and managing hardware/software resources. Providing technical support to users and developing reports to analyze system usage.

  • Database Installation & Configuration:
    Setting up, installing, and configuring database servers in Azure SQL Server and Sybase. Also work on database migration involving moving data from old systems to new systems.
  • Security & Access Control:
    Managing user accounts, permissions, and implementing security measures to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Backup & Recovery:
    Implementing comprehensive backup and disaster recovery plans to prevent data loss.
  • Performance Monitoring & Tuning:
    Monitoring database health to ensure high performance, optimizing queries, and resolving bottlenecks. Includes monitoring server resource utilization, scheduling and verifying database backups, updating security patches, optimizing slow‑running SQL queries, and testing failover/recovery scenarios.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance:
    Performing regular maintenance tasks like patching, updating anti‑virus software, and troubleshooting SQL errors.
  • Data Integrity & Maintenance:
    Ensuring data consistency and accuracy throughout its lifecycle. The position will support all the tasks in performing this function and will cross‑train other team members in these skills as part of knowledge transfer.
Ideal Candidate

Experience as it relates to:

  • Five (5) or more years in working with database administration.
  • Three (3) or more years in database development skills including data migration and data performance tuning to the database objects.
  • The position requires technical expertise in SQL, database design, and cloud technologies, with strong problem‑solving and communication skills to ensure data integrity, security, and performance. Key competencies include backup/recovery, query optimization, scripting/automation, and familiarity with systems such as Azure.
  • Proficient in writing and tuning complex SQL queries, and understanding database languages like PL/SQL, T‑SQL, or scripting languages such as Python or Power Shell. Ability to design logical and physical databases, create schemas, and establish data relationships.
  • Technical knowledge of various platforms to ensure applications and infrastructure stacks are current and supported.
  • Technical knowledge and expertise in server administration and management of server resources. Knowledge of cloud platforms like Azure and managing migration.
  • Experience in working with server admin group and infrastructure team to implement changes to the servers or deployment of new software.
  • Experience and knowledge in developing new dashboards or report development in platforms such as Power BI.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Project and time management skills with the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical degree and two (2) years of experience in data analysis, design, storage, and security. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre‑employment background investigation is required and is conditional upon results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting, and reaching may be required. Ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints. Frequent use of office machine and equipment. Must be able to lift 25–30 lbs. Occasional travel may be required.

Occasionally work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
