The Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine is seeking an Accounting Manager as a valued financial leader within our department. This position oversees two teams of ten professionals with functions for departmental accounting and our clinical revenue cycle. This manager interfaces with and acts as a financial advisor to department leadership, senior administration, faculty, staff, institutional business partners and external agencies to properly analyze, identify, develop and execute impactful financial and process strategies that ensure financial success of the department.

As one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine, Pediatrics operates with a $79 million annual budget across multiple funding sources, including unrestricted and restricted funds. The department consists of 18 divisions and employs over 500 faculty and staff, dedicated to excellence in patient care, education and research.

The Accounting Manager will oversee their teams on accounting compliance, financial budgeting, analysis and leading strategies for the full portfolio of departmental revenues and expenses, and ensure proper processes are in place to support the departments goals or institutional requirements. This role also oversees the key clinical revenue cycle functions for clinical providers in the department which includes analyzing and reporting clinical productivity and benchmarking, identifying issues or opportunities for clinical revenue optimization, partnering with clinical providers to optimize financial performance and maintaining a liaison process for provider credentialing.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader of teams and workload priorities, strong financial problem-solver, analytical thinker, mentor, and collaborator at all levels of the department. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the continued financial health and strategic growth of the Department of Pediatrics. The Accounting Manager reports directly to the Department Administrator and partners closely with the Department Chair and Division leaders as well as other administrative and institutional departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Leadership & Team Management: 5+ years of experience leading a team, including hiring, performance reviews, and mentorship.
  • Financial Oversight & Reporting: Expertise in financial reporting and management for a large organization or healthcare/academic setting; including use of Enterprise systems and various tools for modeling data to analyze, monitor and lead to financial decision-making.
  • Clinical Revenue Cycle Oversight: Understanding of the stages of the clinical revenue cycle and provider productivity metrics (WRVU - work relative value unit), familiarity with EMR (electronic medical record), coding, billing/collections processes.

    Collaboration:

    Ability to educate non-financial partners on department policies, financials, and key performance indicators.
  • Communication & Interpersonal

    Skills:

    Outstanding communicator and strategic thinker with the ability to build trust and foster collaboration across leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Process Improvement & Change Management: Proven experience in driving process improvements and managing organizational change.
