Purpose of Director of Advancement:
The Senior Director of Development is responsible to the Executive Director for directing the organization’s fundraising, including creation and implementation of the organization’s development plan; cultivation and solicitation of donors; management of development staff, events, grants, record keeping; and management of pertinent development fiscal and financial goals.
The Senior Director of Development is a member of NDI New Mexico’s senior management leadership team.
Primary Responsibilities:
Development and Management of Development Functions
- Responsible, with executive staff and the NDI New Mexico Board of Directors, for achieving the organization’s annual, capital, legacy, and endowment development goals as established through the annual and long-range planning process.
- Responsible, in conjunction with the Marketing and Development Staff, and Board Development Committees, to create an annual plan for achieving above goals including supporting all fundraising committees.
- Responsible for managing Development staff (team of approximately 10) to set priority goals and work plans, achieve fundraising goals, ensure successful communication strategies and overall coordination and support of organizational long-range plan, priorities, and objectives.
- Responsible for developing new sources of contributed income including individual, corporate, foundation, and government program services funding.
- Creates and maintains a personal annual portfolio of approximately 150 individual and corporate prospects and donors.
Donor strategies include: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors via one-on-one meetings, telephone conversations, written correspondence, and emails. - Works with staff and board members to maximize the portfolio process and build major donor activity principally in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, with the goal of increasing membership in the Founders Circle and Circle of Excellence and meeting the annual giving goals.
- Ensures the integrity and effective utilization of the organization’s donor database/CRM, including data management, prospect tracking, reporting, and gift acknowledgement process.
- Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive donor stewardship and recognition program to strengthen donor engagement, retention, and long-term philanthropic support.
- Oversee grant development activities, including identifying funding opportunities, coordinating proposal development, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, and cultivating relationships with institutional funders.
Functional Management, Board, and Administration
- Directs Development staff including direct reports:
Santa Fe Development Director, , Albuquerque Events Manager, Government and Relations Manager, Albuquerque Development Director, and Grant Manager and sets direction for additional team members including Grant Writer, Development Associate, and other positions as needed. - Structures department to deliver on goals and priorities; works with managers on job design and performance management; coaches and/or teaches what is required to develop team.
- Delegate operational plan, budgeting, and other functional projects to direct reports and establish and follow through on accountability.
- Motivates and inspires all team members to engage in vision.
- Leads through measures such as goals and KPIs agreed to with the Executive Director.
- Coordinates with Executive Director to cultivate and communicate with the Board of Directors.
- Participates and supports the preparation of quarterly board meetings including development of the board packet and writing reports as needed.
