RN PER DIEM – All Progressive Care Units (PCU) – Day & Night Shifts – University of New Mexico Hospital – Albuquerque

We have immediate RN Per Diem hiring across our PCU departments.

Receive 17% weekday nights, 26% weekend nights, and 15% weekend day shift differentials.

Compensation for this role is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to experience, education, and other business and organizational considerations.

RN Per Diem positions are flat rate: RN Per Diem I $40.30/hour, RN Per Diem II $47.38/hour, and RN Per Diem III $51.49/hour.

Job Summary

Work within the nursing process to provide direct nursing care to assigned patients consistent with clinical specialty, independent of patient location. Serve as a role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care. Ensure adherence to hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. This position does not qualify for out of area float pay. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Work Requirements
  • RN Per Diem I – 2 shifts per schedule, 1 weekend shift, one summer and one winter holiday.
  • RN Per Diem II – 4 shifts per schedule, 2 weekend shifts, one summer and one winter holiday.
  • RN Per Diem III – 10 shifts per schedule, 2 weekend shifts, one summer and one winter holiday.
Essential Functions
  • Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients.
  • Work within hospitals, nursing division and departmental policies.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team, implement and document individualized care plans including discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
  • Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent.
  • Participate in orientation; upon successful completion of preceptor training assume precepting and evaluation responsibilities of new personnel.
  • Assist or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients.
  • Ensure medical records contain necessary information.
  • Answer telephones and triage calls as per departmental policy.
  • Administer medication, including IV medication, via the Seven Rights; document and communicate clinical findings.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Enhance professional growth through educational programs, current literature, in‑services, meetings and workshops.
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve processes.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental or situational risks to patients.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting concerns.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Nursing program (nationally accredited) graduate.
  • Experience: 1 year directly related experience.
  • Licensing/Certification:
    • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New Mexico or by reciprocal agreement.
    • CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or Professional Rescuers, or obtain within 30 calendar days of position start.
    • Obtain UNMH IV Verification within 6 months of position.
    • Tuberculosis testing completed upon hire and as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Bilingual English/Spanish or Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo.
  • Preferred Licensure/Certification:
    Nationally Certified in area of specialty.
Working Conditions Environmental Conditions

Sig Hazard:
Chemicals, bio‑hazardous materials requiring extensive safety precautions and may require protective equipment.

Physical Conditions

Heavy Work:
Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical demands are in excess of those for Medium Work.
