Position Summary This position is for a motivated, degree‑seeking student to assist with ongoing research in the Pulmonary Lab. The lab focuses on studying the impact of chronic lung disease on the blood‑brain barrier using cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and patient‑derived samples. The selected student will contribute to translational research that bridges clinical and laboratory science by performing a variety of research activities, including experimental setup, data collection, and documentation.
This role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to follow established protocols, and maintaining accurate laboratory records in a fast‑paced research environment.
- Assist with cell culture maintenance and experimental procedures
- Perform molecular and biochemical assays, including:
- Western Blot
- ELISA
- PCR
- PBMC biomarker analysis
- Handle and process human‑derived biological samples in accordance with laboratory safety and compliance standards
- Follow detailed laboratory protocols with precision and consistency
- Maintain clear, accurate, and organized documentation of experiments and results
- Prepare reagents, maintain lab supplies, and support general lab operations
- Collaborate with lab members on ongoing research projects
- Enrolled in a degree‑seeking program at UNM
- Enrolled at least half‑time (6 credit hours) during fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count)
- Eligible for Work Study (if applicable) and meeting satisfactory academic progress requirements
- Availability to work 10–15 hours per week
- Completion of undergraduate coursework in biology and chemistry labs
- Prior exposure to or experience in research or a technical laboratory setting
- Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., pipetting, solution preparation)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written protocols precisely
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
- Demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and sound judgment
