Job Description

AECOM is seeking an experienced Mid-level Archaeologist III to join our Cultural Resource team in New Mexico. This is a regular, full‑time, salaried position that will report to the Cultural Resources Team Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Leading fieldwork (survey, testing, data recovery and monitoring), archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping.
  • Authoring and coordinating staff contributions for all aspects of technical report writing to meet state and federal requirements while ensuring compliance with AECOM’s quality assurance processes.
  • Gathering data and other information to be used in the preparation of technical reports.
  • Working both independently and under supervision of senior staff.
  • Supervising personnel in the field, office, and laboratory, as needed.
  • Leading or assisting with project management and preparing proposal scopes and budgets.
  • Providing specialist technical advice on cultural resource management to clients.
  • Liaising and developing positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act, the New Mexico Cultural Properties Protection Act, and the New Mexico Prehistoric and Historic Sites Preservation Act.
  • Ability to organize data in an efficient and clear manner.
  • Drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on analysis.
  • Interpreting and recording data, conducting analyses, comparing findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects, including occasional travel.
  • Being innovative and a problem solver.
  • Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities to the manager.
  • Participating in marketing and business development efforts in pursuit of new clients and projects.
Minimum Requirements
  • BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field.
  • 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout New Mexico and the Southwest.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • US citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MA/MS or PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Relevant field experience in New Mexico and the Western United States.
  • Qualifications for state and federal cultural resource permitting in New Mexico.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualification standards for Archaeology.
  • Experience with agencies in complying with Sections 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Experience leading archaeological field crews.
  • 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the field or office.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis; osteology; historical archaeology).
  • Excellent technical writing skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing cultural resources tasks, including budgets, scheduling and scopes of work.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams of subject matter experts and planners.
  • Experience in supporting proposal preparation.
  • Experience with tribal consultation and familiarity with tribal representatives in New Mexico.
  • Knowledge of New Mexico state, tribal, and local government regulations.
