Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for conducting proficiency tests, standard material characterizations, potential event exercises, real‑world event responses, and other sample analyses for the Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) section. Position also supports the staff manager with supervising personnel, reporting results, maintaining quality control, and developing and validating analytical methods.

How does it get done?

The Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) Section is a CDC-funded program and one of only 10 Level‑1 laboratories in the nation within the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN‑C). The section conducts proficiency testing, method development and validation, standard characterization, emergency response activities, and analysis of samples submitted for chemical threat investigations. Staff perform mass spectrometric analyses of clinical specimens to detect chemical agents and their metabolites and screen unknown samples from first responders for hazardous substances.

The supervisor is responsible for performing complex chemical analyses using liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry, while overseeing inventory, procurement, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting. Additional duties include supporting development of new analytical methods, managing grant funding and budgets, preparing required deliverables, and assisting with laboratory outreach activities. Clinical sample handling experience and qualification as a technical supervisor under CLIA requirements are required.

The Centers for Disease Control – as part of the requirements contained within the Public Health Emergency Preparedness federal Grant for New Mexico and the State Biomonitoring Programs.

Ideal Candidate
  • Four years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting.
  • Background in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry is a must.
  • Experience testing blood, urine and/or serum specimens for chemical analytes or their metabolites using gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and inductively‑coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
  • Experience in separation science and method development.
  • Experience performing standard maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience writing and reviewing standard operating procedures.
  • Experience with data review.
  • Supervisory experience within a laboratory setting.
  • Experience in outreach activities.

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field, and four (4) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre‑employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42

Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, be able to differentiate colors, use sterile techniques, and demonstrate good manual dexterity. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate.

In‑state and out‑of‑state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high pressure gas cylinders.

Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
