Research Scientist
Position Summary
Lead, oversee, and assign forensic caseloads and related work to staff responsible for examining, identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and preserving evidence in crime investigations. Perform technical tasks associated with the area of responsibility, maintain communications within the Scientific Evidence Division (SED), and participate in complex work within the assigned area.

Essential Functions- Perform physical, chemical, biological, botanical, microscopic and/or instrumental examinations and enhancement techniques on evidence samples.
- Oversee, supervise, plan, and review work of assigned staff.
- Provide and coordinate training and continuing education for staff.
- Select, motivate, and evaluate staff.
- Plan, direct, and participate in all forensic and laboratory work of assigned sections.
- Supervise use and maintenance of forensic equipment, microscopes, and instruments.
- Validate employees’ work for accuracy, proper methods, techniques, and compliance with standards.
- Prepare and present technical and statistical reports.
- Conduct technical and administrative reviews of scientific analysis and reports.
- Maintain confidentiality of case information.
- Provide testimony as required.
- Recommend and approve changes to laboratory policies, procedures, and new techniques.
- Develop, manage, and oversee grant funding programs.
- Assist in developing equipment specifications and procurement processes.
- Manage equipment, instrument, and other contracts for assigned sections.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
- Travel and receive training as assigned to maintain professional competency.
- Maintain professional interaction and communication with other forensic scientists, units, and organizations.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information within the area of assignment.
- Resolve complaints efficiently and timely.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Master's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or related field plus three (3) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience;
• or Bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or related field plus four (4) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience, applicable forensic certification, and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience;
• or Bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or related field plus five (5) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience.
• Master's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science, social science, business, public administration, or related field plus three (3) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience;
• or Bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science, social science, business, public administration, or related field plus four (4) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience, applicable forensic certification, and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience;
• or Bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science, social science, business, public administration, or related field plus five (5) years of discipline‑specific forensic experience and three (3) years of direct supervisory experience.
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain it by the date of hire, and possession of a City Operator’s Permit within six (6) months from the date of hire.
Working ConditionsEnvironmental: Variety of forensic, laboratory, and crime scene environments; potential exposure to unpleasant odors, fumes, dust, contagious diseases, bodily fluids, explosive materials, loud noises, and irritant, carcinogenic, toxic, or mutagenic chemicals; prolonged computer use.
Physical: Ability to maintain personal mobility; may be required to move objects up to fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis.
