Organics Section Chemist; DOH​/SLD

The New Mexico Department of Health, Scientific Laboratory, Chemistry Bureau performs environmental testing.

To perform the environmental testing of water samples for the presence of chemical pollutants.

Performing the analyses of water samples for the presence of chemical pollutants by following standard operation procedures and the US Environmental Protection Agency testing methods. Processing, evaluating, organizing, and submitting laboratory test results for review and acceptance by a supervisor. Performing instrument maintenance and ordering laboratory supplies. Preparing sampling kits for clients.

New Mexico Environment Department (Drinking Water Bureau, Ground Water Quality Bureau, Surface Water Quality Bureau, Solid Waste Bureau, Air Quality Bureau), all New Mexico public water systems, all New Mexico tribal entities, National Park Service, US Forest Service, and contractors who manage public water systems.

• 1 year of experience working in an analytical laboratory or a clinical laboratory.
• 1 year of experience in using standard laboratory equipment such as pipettes, volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, PH indicators, and analytical balances.
• 1 year of experience working with gas chromatogrophy (GC), mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and/or high performance liquid chromatography (HLPC) instrumentation.
• 1 year of experience working in a laboratory testing for environmental pollutants in water samples.

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field, and two (2) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Pre‑employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.

Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high pressure gas cylinders.

Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
