Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Utility Technician III – Operator to join our underground utilities team. This position is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment, performing advanced utility installations, and supporting crew leadership on water, sewer, and storm drain projects while ensuring productivity, accuracy, and jobsite safety.
Responsibilities- Perform all duties of a Utility Technician II, including pipe laying, utility connections, grade work, and jobsite support
- Operate heavy equipment including loaders, excavators, backhoes, and skid steers
- Perform trenching, grading, backfill, and compaction in support of underground utility installation
- Install underground piping systems for water, sewer, and storm drain, including large diameter utilities
- Demonstrate a high level of skill in large diameter pipe installation and alignment
- Calculate pipe elevations, slopes, and grades to ensure proper flow and compliance with plans
- Set and maintain proper line and grade using lasers, levels, and grade stakes
- Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and elevations
- Assist with and oversee trench box setup, shoring, and safe trenching practices
- Coordinate with foremen, operators, and crew members to maintain efficient workflow
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite
- 5+ years of experience in underground utilities and heavy equipment operation
- Proven experience operating loaders, excavators, backhoes, and skid steers
- Extensive knowledge of underground utility installation, including large diameter pipe
- Ability to calculate pipe elevations, slopes, and grades accurately
- Strong understanding of trench safety, shoring, and excavation practices
