Overview
SMS is looking for a Telephone Systems OSP Cable Technician on the Kirtland Air Force Base C4 Contract in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Outside Plant Cable Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing OSP copper and fiber cable systems and related infrastructure throughout the installation.

Responsibilities- Perform routine cable locations for dig permit requests.
- Survey manholes and duct systems for government‑run projects.
- Conduct occasional quality assurance inspections.
- Perform OSP copper and fiber cable splicing for repair.
- Maintain and repair existing manholes; infrequent installation or repair of inside telephone and network wiring.
- Apply current copper and fiber installation and testing standards; perform installations according to base, industry, safety standards, and legal requirements.
- Execute work based on customer‑submitted work orders, dig permit requests, or emergency outage reports.
- Coordinate with customers, permitting office, and other work centers.
- Document, label, and record all work, including entry into electronic records systems as required.
- Knowledge of telecommunications systems and practices.
- Familiarity with copper and fiber cable installation, repair, and cable locating.
- Understanding of exterior communications infrastructure, including manholes, ducts, inner‑ducts, and aerial lines.
- Experience maintaining and repairing manholes, patching leaks, replacing damaged parts, and ensuring accessibility for maintenance and repairs.
- Customer service experience.
- Ability to meet physical requirements such as climbing ladders, standing, bending, lifting, and working in confined spaces.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with customers and coworkers tactfully and courteously.
- Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures, and regulations in a telecommunications environment.
- Experience with tools and test equipment required for installation and maintenance of telephone and data network services.
- Refined critical‑thinking skills, self‑starter, and ability to direct team activities.
- Diplomatic, multi‑task capable, adaptive to dynamic environments, dependable and reliable.
- Previous experience with interior and/or exterior cable installation, maintenance, and testing.
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Telephone Journeyman License JS7 – New Mexico preferred.
- BICSI Installer 1 or 2 preferred.
- Requires a DoD SECRET security clearance.
