Journeyman Auto Mechanic
Union: U32: $54.09 Per Hour
DEPARTMENT: TRANSPORTATION
- Under general directive supervision of chief mechanic, perform a variety of duties in the complete maintenance, overhaul, and repair of vehicles such as cars, trucks, tractors, hydraulic units, compressor and portable generator motor units; maintain shop facilities and be generally responsible for all work in progress, scheduling on different repair jobs, and property. Use and maintain all types of welders, power tools, diagnostic instruments, and testing equipment.
- Receive various job work orders and establish priority and scheduling to expedite equipment repair. Make working diagnosis of mechanical failures and determine repair or replacement. Perform or may assign the dismantling, overhauling, and assembling of engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, etc.
- Overhaul or repair all electric parts, carburetion, ignition, and instruments including electrical generators and starting motors, voltage regulators, electrical indicators, vacuum systems, electric and mechanical fuel pumps, electric or mechanical brakes, etc.
- Initiate requisitions for internal purchasing or may order parts from local service establishments to maintain an adequate supply of parts on hand. Maintain records of material and parts used, jobs completed, and schedule of vehicle preventative maintenance.
- Perform body repair work including removing and repairing dents and creases in bodies and fenders, remove and install fenders; install glass in doors, windows, and windshields of bodies; perform simple carpentry work in the repair of wooden truck bodies. Mix, blend, and use a spray gun in touching up repaired portions of vehicle or completed paint jobs as necessary.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with safety and operational procedures; be proficient in the application of first aid to injured persons; assist in providing instruction and training to shop personnel.
- Perform other related and assigned duties.
