Position Summary

Lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for maintaining City irrigation systems; inspect, test, maintain, repair and install irrigation systems and backflow prevention devices on City properties; perform specialized tasks involving troubleshooting of problem areas and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Essential And Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for the installation, renovation, addition and maintenance of irrigation system equipment and mechanical systems.
  • Provide technical assistance or expertise to maintenance personnel in resolving irrigation system malfunctions.
  • Provide functional training and guidance in a lead capacity on assigned project; lead staff assigned to maintain, diagnoses and repair various components of the City's irrigation systems; effectively apply and comply with all applicable regulations, policies and procedures related to area of assignment.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoot problems with field units within irrigations system including backflow prevention devices, controllers, valves and related systems; operate and program both electromechanical, computerized and digital controllers to insure proper irrigation system operation and soil moisture content.
  • Make minor field electrical repairs to controllers, electric valves, lines, sprinkler heads and other irrigation components and related systems.
  • Inspect, test, repair and replace backflow prevention devices on City properties; conduct systematic inspections of irrigation systems; repair, maintain and modify existing irrigation systems as needed; conduct water pressure checks, repair and adjust booster pump.
  • Install various irrigation monitoring sensors to ensure proper soil moisture content and efficient application of irrigation water.
  • Develops, maintains and submits a variety of activity time, materials and parts records ans reports as required.
  • Estimate time and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials supporting the renovation and/or installation of irrigation systems; maintain proper inventory levels and daily logs.
  • Supervise and safely operate light to heavy maintenance equipment and tools including pumps, gauges, leak detectors, tractors, backhoe and trucks required for work assignments
  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Research and obtain parts and supplies needed for maintenance, repair and/or installation of irrigation system components and/or backflow devices
  • Coordinate the activities of personnel, supplies, equipment, and materials for the completion of an assigned project.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures through safety and in-service training.
  • Attend and participate in all training as scheduled.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • May be required to work odd hours when assigned to "on-call" status.
Minimum Education , Experience And Additional Requirements Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
  • High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in construction, landscaping, or irrigation; and
  • Three (3) years of irrigation system maintenance experience.
Additional Requirements
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Possession of a valid State of New Mexico Irrigation Certificate (JS-6).
  • Possession of a valid State of New Mexico Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester/Repair Certificate.
Working Conditions Environmental

Field environment; exposure to inclement weather conditions, moving objects and vehicles, machinery and moving parts, slippery and uneven surfaces, smoke, fumes, gas, dust, grease, oil, pesticides, chemicals and treated water; may occasionally work in confined spaces; may occasionally be exposed to electrical energy.

Physical

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; medium to heavy lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
