On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Test and perform maintenance on low voltage circuit breakers.
- Help maintain inventory of circuit breakers.
- Ensure circuit breaker testing equipment is properly cared for and maintained.
- Prepare breaker testing equipment for calibration.
- Perform preventative maintenance and testing of building electrical systems.
- As a condition of employment, Metal Trades positions are represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC) and employees must pay monthly membership dues or agency fee.
- Perform required periodic testing of systems and utilize a computerized database to maintain required records.
- Perform work using industry standard safety practices such as: proper use and inspection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and test equipment for confirmation of the de-energization of electrical circuits including but not limited to insulation resistance tester, digital multi-meter, and circuit tracers.
- Devise tests, fabricate assemblies, or troubleshoot as necessary, and keep work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- May consult with other Tradespersons and provide direction to other employees as required.
- Diagnose and correct malfunctions in electrical systems, circuits, and equipment.
- Must have working knowledge of SNL's Low Voltage Electrical Distribution systems.
- Will perform appropriate, auxiliary, or related duties in the general area of work activity necessary to accomplish the above.
- Will support various electrical trade disciplines on an as needed basis.
- Test circuit breakers, safety switches, transformers, VFDs, motor starters to NETA standards.
- Lay out, install, modify, troubleshoot, repair and maintain specialized facilities, distribution systems including transfer switches and standby/emergency generator systems.
- Responsibilities include diagnosing and correcting malfunctions in highly specialized electrical and electronic test equipment, and electromechanical circuits and devices associated with facility and process equipment and test equipment.
- Work on complex electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems, circuits, and devices associated with facility and process equipment.
- Test circuit breakers, safety switches, transformers, VFDs, motor starters to NETA standards.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance.
- Certification or training in the testing and maintenance of electrical circuit breakers.
- Experience in the proper use and operation of circuit breaker testing equipment.
- Requirements include completion of a State approved electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent.
- Typical experience includes minimum of 3-5 years as a fully qualified Electrical Tradesperson and can obtain a journeyman's license.
- The successful candidate must be able to work either independently, or as a member of a team and have leadership skills, and good communication skills (written and verbal).
- Punctuality, and a solid attendance record.
- Knowledge of how a Behavior Based Safety system functions works to help reduce injuries and provide a safer workplace.
- Active Department of Energy "L" or "Q" clearance.
- Ability to work overtime and be on-call.

About Our TeamThe Electrical Maintenance Department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of Sandia/NM's electrical and fire protection systems. This department consists of teams who perform Electrical Breaker Testing & Maintenance, Predictive and Preventative Maintenance on High Voltage and Low Voltage Building systems, Inspection Testing and Maintenance of Fire Alarm & Fire Protection Systems as well as maintenance of Street and Building Lighting, Power Metering, Emergency Lighting/Inverters, Intrusion Alarm System, Electrically operated roll-up doors, gates and Standby Generators.
