* why does the job exist?

social service assistants help social workers, healthcare workers, and other professionals to provide services to people. They usually work under the direction of workers from a variety of fields, such as nursing, psychiatry, psychology, or social work. Social service assistants provide services to clients to help them improve their quality of life. They assess clients' needs, investigate their eligibility for benefits and services such as food stamps, medicaid and welfare, and help clients obtain them.

They also arrange transportation, if necessary, and provide emotional support. They monitor and keep case records on clients and report progress to supervisors and case managers. Social service assistants play a variety of roles in the community; they may organize and lead group activities, assist clients in need of counseling or crisis intervention, or administer food banks or emergency fuel programs.

In halfway houses, group homes, and government-supported housing programs, they assist adults who need supervision with personal hygiene and daily living tasks. They review clients' records, ensure that they take prescribed medication, talk with family members, and confer with medical personnel and other caregivers to provide insight into clients' needs. Assistants also give emotional support and help clients become involved in community recreation programs and other activities.

  • assist and support staff in meeting national standards and/or performance based outcomes measures by providing needed supportive services to agency clients.

  • identify potential community based services, share information to assist staff and conduct activities that promote safety, permanency and well-being.
  • ideal candidate

    experience as it relates to:
  • working directly with children, youth, and their families;
  • partner with community service providers as it relates to children, and youth;
  • working with youth in a school setting;
  • determining eligibility for services that might be needed for the children, youth and families;
  • conduct and complete assessments of safety, risks, strengths, and family needs;
  • developing safety plans for the children, youth and families;
  • participate in multidisciplinary meetings;
  • identify, provide, and/or arrange timely assessments/evaluations/ interviews;
  • conduct medical case management activities for eligible clients.
  • minimum qualification

    high school diploma or equivalency and three (3) months experience as a home care worker, management of a home, or experience in providing social or rehabilitative services to clients in the community and/or in an institution. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupational totaling three (3) months may substitute for the required experience.

    employment requirements

    pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current and valid driver's license.

    working conditions

    work is performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (vdt) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required. Work schedules may differ than the standard 8 - 5 monday through friday. Some overtime may also be required on occasion.
