The School Based Violence Intervention Program (SBVIP) is a youth violence reduction program that focuses on youth at highest risk for engaging in violence cycles, including gun violence. Components of the program’s public health approach include working with individuals and families, identifying root causes of high-risk behaviors, and reducing the risk for future victimization or participation in the cycles of violence.

Program components include assertive outreach coordination, intervention specialists, and community-based partners.

The Intervention Specialist will provide intensive case management to individuals at highest risk of engaging in the cycles of violence against students or staff, gang involvement, weapon use, and/or substance abuse. Intervention Specialists will work with individuals to address basic needs, facilitate personal and social development to create healthy and on-going support systems and foster relationships that enable them to gain a voice, influence, and place in their community.

This is an on-site and at times field position which requires meeting with clients at the school and at times in non-traditional office settings in the community. This position is primarily a direct service position (80%) with the balance of the time (20%) spent performing general administrative tasks, data input, case noting and attendance of required staff meetings and trainings.

This is a TERM grant-funded contract position.

This is a contract position, Intervention Specialist will keep detailed time of working with participants, and other documentation as required.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Essential Functions:

Attend necessary staff meetings to identify and intervene with violence- impacted individuals and refer to appropriate services for resources.

Accompany School Based VIP team on interventions with individuals at high risk to be involved in the cycles of violence against students or staff, gang involvement, weapons use, and/or substance abuse.

Develop culturally specific, client centered case management plans that utilize trauma informed resources to support program participants and their families.

Provide intensive case management according to school-based diversion strategies and higher-level management staff.

When applicable facilitate youth engagement and self-determination to build and strengthen their identity and role in the community; work collaboratively with youth to address their full range of needs; create and nurture protective factors (such as caring relationships, high expectations, and relevant and meaningful participation) in each youth’s environment.

Attend all social services case review meetings to coordinate service delivery; staff meetings and other meetings as directed.

Maintain case management documentation in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner in accordance with direction by higher –level management.

Have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and database entry.

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients.

Knowledge of principles and practices governing client rights.

Maintain confidentiality of all client information in accordance with FERPA guidelines.

Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions; project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

Supplemental Functions:

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

High School Diploma or Equivalency (GED);

Three (3) years’ experience in peer related services, case management, substance abuse, corrections, law enforcement, or behavioral health related tasks.

Work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call as required.

Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including for Albuquerque Public Schools.

Intervention Specialist must be able to supply their own transportation with current valid insurance.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
