The YMCA of Central New Mexico Swim Team coach provides leadership in the preparation, planning, and operation of swim team practices, builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents, give swimmers knowledge to understand and master strokes allowing for movement up through the swim team age groups and provide corrective feedback that will enhance swimmers' techniques. They also ensure the safety of swimmers at practice by following proper precautions and regulations, follows guidelines for practices and swim meets, leads practices of the swim group(s) with care and excitement, guides swimmers during swim meets, and assists with scheduling swimmers for races and meets.

  • Reports to work on time, in uniform, and at position when the shift begins.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to make appropriate judgments and decisions in any situation.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations quickly and efficiently in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
    • Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool, aquatic area, locker rooms, and restrooms.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Coach with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Attends all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Minimum age requirement of 17.
  • Certifications:

    CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, Oxygen Administration certification (required within 30 days of hire).
