Yard Master; Santa Fe Territory

The Mid-Region Council of Governments/ Rio Metro Regional Transit District is seeking a Yard Master (Santa Territory) for its Rail Operations.

The Yard Master is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant coordination of all rail operations within the Santa Fe service territory, including the Santa Fe Depot railyard and the corridor extending to Kewa Station. This position provides operational oversight of train movements, yard activity, right‑of‑way conditions, and station areas, while ensuring adherence to all federal, state, and agency safety regulations. The Yard Master serves as a key field representative of RMRTD Rail Operations, coordinating with internal departments, operating contractors, vendors, regulatory partners, and local agencies, and responding to emergencies and service disruptions as required.

• Direct and manage all train movements within the assigned territory between the Santa Fe Depot and Kewa Station.
• Oversee and coordinate all movements into, out of, and within the Santa Fe Depot railyard.
• Ensure the safe and efficient operation of rail services throughout the territory at all times.
• Monitor rail operations to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), state, and RMRTD regulations, rules, and operating procedures.
• Observe, document, and report conditions and activities along the right‑of‑way and at station facilities; coordinate corrective actions as needed.
• Respond to and assist with operational incidents, service disruptions, and emergency situations.
• Coordinate daily operations with train crews, dispatch, contractors, vendors, and other internal and external stakeholders.

• High school diploma or GED (required)
• 5 years railroad experience

• This safety‑sensitive position requires adherence to railroad operating rules and federal regulations and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing under FRA guidelines.
• The selected candidate must establish and maintain residency in Santa Fe, NM as a condition of employment.
• Other duties as assigned

• Familiarity with General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), Maintenance‑of‑Way Operating Rules (MOWOR), Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations, railroad operations, and related technologies.
• Strong computer proficiency for operational and reporting tasks.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Commitment to safety in high‑stakes operational environments

• Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Employment pending a successful background check, a valid New Mexico driver’s license and no more than one (1) moving violation in the past year. All new employees are hired subject to a one‑year probationary status. Salary is entry level commensurate with experience.
