Building Inspector

This position performs technical inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction to ensure compliance with adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, property maintenance, and related codes to protect public health, safety, and welfare. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Building Official.

• Conduct field inspections of new construction, alterations, additions, and repairs.
• Inspect foundations, framing, structural components, life safety systems, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, accessibility, and related systems for compliance with adopted codes.
• Review approved construction plans and specifications to verify field compliance.
• Identify deficiencies and explain corrective actions required to achieve compliance.
• Issue correction notices, inspection reports, stop‑work orders, and related documentation as authorized.
• Investigate complaints related to unsafe or unpermitted construction activity.
• Assist with review of permit applications and construction documents as assigned.
• Maintain accurate and detailed inspection records using departmental procedures and software systems.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to contractors, property owners, engineers, architects, and the general public.
• Assist with post‑disaster damage assessments and emergency response activities as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Thorough knowledge of building construction methods, materials, and safety practices.
• Knowledge of adopted building, residential, plumbing, mechanical, energy, electrical, property maintenance, accessibility, life safety, and related codes.
• Knowledge of inspection principles and enforcement procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and permitting/inspection software systems.
• Ability to safely operate a city vehicle.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, specifications, site plans, and technical drawings.
• Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
• Ability to identify violations and determine appropriate corrective measures.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to exercise sound technical judgment and maintain fairness and consistency in enforcement.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners, engineers, architects, coworkers, and the public.
• Ability to work independently and manage assigned inspection workload.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building construction or inspection or a related field.
• Must obtain ICC Residential Inspector or Building Inspector Certification within two (2) years of hire.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and driving record suitable for insurability.
• Willing to work non‑standard hours and overtime as required.
• Willing to travel overnight to attend training and continuing education as required.
• Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (frequent walking, standing, bending, climbing ladders, crawling, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs.) Work may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Exposure to construction sites, uneven terrain, noise, dust, etc.
