Overview

The Art Director is responsible for the overall visual narrative of Covey Rise magazine. The Art director creates a magazine every 2 months that is visually inviting, provocative, and appropriately commercial. It is up to the Art Director to ensure every image and visual element meets, if not exceeds, the Covey Rise brand standards. Their duties include deciding which art pieces or graphics to include in their material, establishing the overall look for each piece of the magazine, and finalizing designs for the final product to create visually appealing pieces.

They are also responsible for creating and maintaining an overall visual style throughout the publication. To do this, the Art Director must help figure out the best way to represent different concepts visually and work closely with the editorial team as they develop page layouts and images. The Art Director also has administrative duties, including managing budgets and coordinating deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • 1. Responsible for providing the creative, artistic direction, and conception of each magazine issue, including but not limited to covers, features, columns, and the overall magazine direction, layout, design, typography, etc., for Covey Rise magazine.
  • 2. Maintain regular and proactive communication with key team members involved in the planning, layout, editing, production, and printing of the magazine to ensure timeliness and compliance with the production schedule.
  • 3. Consistently provide multiple options for layout and design, in efforts to tell the best visual narrative alongside the editorial narrative in all stories, columns, etc.
  • 4. Responsible for ensuring the magazine adheres to the brand standard, editing the magazine for grammatical errors and visual errors, and preparing each book to be press-ready.
  • 5. Understand design and smart copy, and recognize the best approach to the layout and entire book.
  • 6. Collaborate regularly with Editors, Editorial Team concerning editorial calendar planning, contributor assignments, new story ideas, etc.
  • 7. Oversee art department operations, including issue planning, budgeting, and art department interns/sub-contractors, layout, design, contributor assignments/contracts, enforcing deadlines, and managing the art department’s invoices per issue.
  • 8. Responsible for reviewing and verifying advertising creative is set properly specifications, coordinating with advertisers and the Covey Rise advertising coordinator on incorrect advertising creative, working with each until the correct ad is submitted, exporting of all advertising pages.
  • 9. Responsible for preparing all content and advertising pages to be press-ready, and to deliver files to the printer. To work with pre‑press and other printer staff to problem‑solve any files until each job is complete.
  • 10. Responsible for art department post‑press operations, including preparing art for Social Media Manager, and digital marketing assets for distribution and website. Also responsible for providing marketing files to contributors and featured subjects.
  • 11. Serve as a primary liaison with photographer/artist contributors and work with them to coordinate assigned photo shoots, provide shot lists, commissioned art, and general photography/art needs, etc. When assigning/coordinating photography for the magazine, ensure the contributor understands and agrees that submitted works can be used digitally (website, email marketing, social media) at no additional expense.
  • 12. Actively recruit and vet new photographer/artist contributors for the magazine through: image submissions, scouting, queries, and networking.
  • 13. Nurture and cultivate the roster of contributing Photographers, Illustrators, and Graphic Artists, working alongside them, create trusting interpersonal relationships.
  • 14. Communicate/follow up consistently with all photographers to pursue cover photos, feature photos, hired shoots, other collateral photo needs, and stay in tune with their upcoming travel schedules.
