Summary:
This position performs technical work supporting the City’s sewer collection system, with primary responsibility for maintaining and managing sewer utility GIS data and work order information using ESRI, Cityworks, and related systems.
Primary Responsibilities- Maintain, update, and ensure accuracy of the City’s sewer utility GIS data.
- Assist with GIS data collection and verification related to inspections, capital projects, repairs, and system improvements.
- Utilize the Cityworks asset management software to track work orders, inspections, preventative maintenance activities, etc. for the Sewer Department.
- Generate reports, maps, and data summaries for internal use, compliance, and monthly SSCRP meetings.
- Serve as a technical resource for sewer staff on the use of Cityworks, mobile devices, and locating equipment.
- Read and interpret maps, drawings, plans, and technical documentation.
- Assist the Superintendent with project inspections and coordination of sewer-related work.
- Respond to customer service requests and citizen complaints; document issues and resolutions in Cityworks.
- Support emergency response activities by assisting with locating affected system areas, documenting events, and coordinating information.
- Collect water samples for testing as required.
- Maintain accurate records including maintenance logs, flow records, inspection data, and other documentation.
- Operate specialized tools or equipment as required to support sewer operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of sewer collection system operations and infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of GIS, mapping, and asset management systems.
- Knowledge of applicable environmental regulations related to wastewater and sewer systems.
- Understanding of safety practices associated with sewer operations.
- Skill in using computers, tablets (iPad), and mobile field technology; proficiency with Microsoft Excel and basic data reporting tools.
- Skill in reading and interpreting maps, diagrams, and testing equipment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to data accuracy and detail.
- Ability to learn and apply GIS and asset management standards for utilities.
- Ability to train and assist staff with system use and troubleshooting.
- Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED.
- Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license and driving record suitable for insurability.
- ADEM Grade I Wastewater Operator Certification preferred or ability to obtain if required.
- Willing to attend training and continuing education, including overnight travel when required.
- Able to work in inclement weather conditions and environments involving wastewater and potentially hazardous conditions.
- Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending, and lift up to 50 pounds.)
