Equipment Operator II; Brush Truck

This position is responsible for operating a heavy‑dut​y brush truck with grapple loader on a daily route in support of roadside pickup of debris. This position reports to the Environmental Services Superintendent.

• Operates a brush truck along designated routes for the collection and transportation of approved materials.
• Operates a grapple loader to collect, load, and transport approved materials to the City’s landfill.
• Assists with the operation and maintenance of the City’s inert landfill in accordance with ADEM regulations and established procedures.
• Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to, front‑end loader, bulldozer, and dump truck as assigned.
• Assists with roadside cleanup, storm debris removal, and emergency response operations.
• Performs routine labor associated with recycling and landfill operations, including spreading, compacting, and covering materials as directed.
• Conducts pre‑trip inspections and performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment; reports mechanical issues promptly.
• Assists other City departments with debris removal and equipment operation as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to heavy equipment and landfill operations.
• Knowledge of city geography.
• Ability to operate a grapple loader, loader, bulldozer, and heavy‑duty truck in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co‑workers, and the public.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license and driving record suitable for insurability. Class B CDL required.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment preferred; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Must obtain ADEM Landfill Operator certification within 18 months of hire if required.
• Willing to travel overnight for training and continuing education courses.
• Willing to work non‑standard hours and respond to emergencies as required.
• Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position; walking, standing, bending, climbing a ladder (climbing up and down as many as 50 times per day) and lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
