Treatment Plant Operator Trainee
A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Utilities. An eligible list will be established based on the examination as outlined below.
Examples of DutiesParticipates in and receives training to achieve and maintain proficiency in the following duties:
- Operates treatment plant equipment used to control the flow, processing, discharge, and distribution of water and wastewater.
- Reads, analyzes, and monitors gauges, meters, charts, and instruments. Interprets instrument readings and test results to determine water and wastewater processing requirements.
- Operates valves and other controls to move water and wastewater through the various stages of processing.
- Makes periodic inspections of pumping stations, treatment plants, wells, and other bureau facilities.
- Analyzes water and wastewater samples. Performs tests for pH, chlorine, and dissolved oxygen. Regulates and adjusts chemical additives to control water quality.
- Maintains and repairs mechanical and electrical treatment plant equipment such as pumps and motors.
- Maintains the physical plant and grounds surrounding wells, treatment plants, and related bureau facilities.
- Participates in on‑job and safety‑related training.
- Maintains daily records of plant activities. Takes and records measurements of water usage, rainfall, temperature, and water quality. Prepares reports.
Performs other related duties as required.

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of mathematics, mechanics, and of basic scientific methods such as sampling and testing of water.
Examination ProcedureQualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and/or experience, as submitted on their application and supplemental questionnaire.
Conditions of EmploymentThis is a training classification. Attainment of a passing score on the examination of the Class 3 Water Treatment Plant Operator or Class 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator given by the Maryland State Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators is required within 3 years of appointment. Upon successful completion of one of the above examinations, one year of experience in the training classification, and subject to the approval of the Office of Budget and Finance and Office of Human Resources, incumbents will be reclassified to Treatment Plant Operator I.
Incumbents who do not attain the required certification will be terminated.
Employees in this classification will work on either a rotating or a fixed shift which will include weekends, holidays, and overtime when scheduled. Employees in this classification are subject to call to duty in emergencies.
Physical and Environmental ConditionsThe work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as confined space, adverse weather, and live electrical wires.

Medical ExaminationApplicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination. The examination will include urinalysis to prove the applicant is drug free.
