District Recruitment for Rapides Parish:

This position is located in the District 08 /Unit 071/Welding Shop of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor

A. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.

Required Qualifications

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on the job experience:

  • Three years of experience or training in the welding trade;
  • Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions plus one year of experience or training in the welding trade.

Job Duties:
  • Serves in a small work group of welders in the repair shop.
  • Knowledge and experience to skillfully operate, use and maintain all welding machines and equipment used in the safe performance of fabricating, building or repairing various equipment and tools.
  • Meet all structured training requirements for this position and maintain a valid Class E license.
  • Required to sit, squat, walk, bend, climb on and off of equipment and trailers, and must be able to lift loads of up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
  • Required to perform manual labor tasks and prepare documents such as Daily Work reports, Equipment Repair Orders, and Daily Vehicle Inspection reports.

Appointment Type: Probational/Promotional

Location: Alexandria, La

Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 6:30 AM-5:00 PM

  • Operate desktop computer and have word processing skills.
  • Certificate of completion/attendance of vocational training in welding.
  • Must respond to call-outs during after-hours, days off, weekends, and holidays.
  • Work tasks are carried out during ALL types of extreme weather conditions and hazardous work environments.
