Overview
Join the City of Alexandria as a Building Inspector! This position is ideal for individuals with construction or inspection experience who are interested in building safety, public service, and long-term professional growth. This position's work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm with paid holidays and evenings and weekends off.
If not already licensed as a Building Official or Building Official-Limited, the chosen candidate will receive hands-on training through a combination of field experience, classroom instruction, and mentorship from experienced inspectors. This position is designed to build the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for the Building Official Certification Exam within one to two years.

ObjectiveThis position assists with the administration and enforcement of all construction-related codes and provides a wide variety of inspection services that will ensure that City building, limited zoning and related codes, policies and ordinances are effectively and equitably enforced.
Supervision- Works under the general direction of the Building Official and Community Development Director

Shared Plan Review / Building Inspection Accountabilities- Reviews building/improvement plans involving all aspects of construction for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances
- Reviews permit applications and plans for completeness and accuracy; corrects inconsistencies when found
- Prepares building permits and calculates building permit fees in accordance with fee schedule
- Assists contractors, architects, homeowners and others in understanding and conforming to applicable codes and ordinances
- Performs inspections on all permitted construction work involving new and existing structures to assure work is performed in accordance with applicable codes and ordinances
- Receives, investigates and conducts enforcement and abatement to resolve building, limited zoning, erosion control and nuisance code complaints
- Reviews plan submittals, issues permits and conducts site inspections to ensure compliance with erosion control requirements
- Administers City competency testing and licensing program for mechanical contractors working within jurisdiction
- Assists Community Development Director in conducting field inspections for development agreements, zoning conformity, and/or other conditions of approval
- Prepares written reports, notices and other correspondence as appropriate and records all inspections made and actions taken
- Verifies work permits, certifications and licenses of persons engaged in construction work
- Investigates complaints regarding material and workmanship quality and violation of building codes
- Monitors all permit files to ensure open files are closed in a timely and diligent manner and archives closed permit files
- Advises supervisor and staff of significant matters to ensure satisfactory completion of division affairs
- Courteously receives and promptly responds to inquiries from citizens, contractors, staff and others with an interest in the building code activities
- Issues citations as appropriate for code violations that warrant further action and prepares/provides legal documentation to the City Attorney for legal or judicial remedy
- Thorough knowledge of the state building code and ability to interpret the code
- Knowledge of the practices, procedures, equipment, and materials used in municipal building inspection
- Knowledge of soils, building construction, building design and blueprint reading
- Knowledge of residential/commercial plumbing and mechanical codes
- Knowledge of municipal planning and zoning requirements and procedures
- Courteous and effective communication both orally and in written format with staff, contractors and the public
- Ability to meet physical requirements of conducting inspections
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with City staff and the public
- Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with owners, architects, developers, contractors and the general public
- Working familiarity with computer hardware and software related to inspections
- Must be self-motivated and have excellent organizational skills
- Must have the ability to effectively manage time
- Must have excellent problem-solving skills
