Pipe Crew Supervisor

The Pipe Crew Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the installation of underground storm sewer. This role provides direct supervision to pipe crew members, ensuring that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements. The Supervisor serves as a leader, trainer, and communicator between field crews, project managers, and equipment operators.

Essential Functions
  • Direct, schedule, and oversee the daily activities of the pipe crew.
  • Assign tasks, monitor progress, and provide hands-on instruction when necessary.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate crew members, promoting skill development and accountability.
  • Foster a positive team environment that emphasizes safety, respect, and productivity.
  • Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure proper installation.
  • Oversee excavation, trenching, pipe laying, bedding, back filling, and compaction.
  • Verify correct pipe type, alignment, slope, and depth per project specifications.
  • Track and report material usage, crew hours, and daily production to project management.
  • Enforce all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and trench safety/shoring practices.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
  • Ensure proper use of PPE, equipment, and safe work practices at all times.
  • Monitor and correct unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately.
  • Coordinate project managers regarding schedule, priorities, and resources.
  • Communicate clearly with equipment operators, truck drivers, and subcontractors to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Provide updates on progress, delays, and workforce needs.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are used properly and maintained.
  • Perform spot checks with lasers, grade rods, and levels to confirm proper installation.
  • Maintain records of inspections and corrective actions taken.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents and grade stakes.
  • Knowledge of underground utility installation techniques and standards.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
  • 3–5 years of underground utility/pipe crew experience.
  • 1–2 years of experience in a lead, foreman, or supervisory role preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. An acceptable driving record is required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and trench safety standards.
  • Proficiency with construction lasers, levels, and other grade-checking tools.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and standing.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust, noise).
  • Tolerance for long hours and extended periods of standing and walking on uneven terrain.
  • Field-based construction sites with exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, and changing conditions.
  • Seasonal overtime and extended hours during peak construction.
  • Travel to various project sites required.
