Position: Onsite Construction Manager / Engineer

Job Summary

Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking an Onsite Construction Manager or Engineer with an established track record to perform subcontractor oversight and/or Owner’s Advisor (OA) services at a wide variety of project sites around the country. The successful candidate will support Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)/Design-Build projects focused on Industrial Water/Wastewater Infrastructure, Remediation Construction, and Industrial Process/Mechanical work for clients in the Energy and Production market sectors.

This position requires significant travel, with deployment to project sites for durations of 1-2 weeks up to several months. Travel rotations typically bring team members home every 2 weeks. Travel costs are reimbursed via per diem or submitted expense reports, depending on project requirements.

The Construction Manager/Engineer will oversee onsite operations and be responsible for implementing BC’s safety and quality programs, developing and managing project schedules, coordinating with subcontractors, managing risk, reviewing subcontractor pay applications, and tracking production, change management, submittals, and RFIs. The goal is to deliver projects to completion in a timely and profitable manner.

The Construction Manager/Engineer will collaborate with the project director, project engineer, and project manager, and keep them fully informed of field status. This role directs all subcontractors on the project, provides leadership in training and mentoring, and assists with initiatives requiring field expertise. The role also acts as a liaison between the BC design team and subcontractors to efficiently resolve construction issues.

Between field assignments, the position conducts training and assists with office-based project management tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct quality control and assurance inspections and report findings.
  • Coordinate and oversee non-conformance reporting and closeout.
  • Coordinate contractor or subcontractor activities and ensure adherence to project plans.
  • Define project scopes and objectives.
  • Monitor project progress and provide detailed reports to stakeholders.
  • Monitor project schedules and ensure adherence to timelines.
  • Assist with complex RFIs and provide accurate responses.
  • Implement change management processes and communicate changes effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate health and safety requirements to meet company safety standards.
  • Oversee contractor or subcontractor punch list activities to meet project closeout requirements.
  • Report subcontractor and vendor budget performance and change management.
  • Adapt to additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship

  • Provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficient in construction management and project management techniques.
  • Strong skills in managing contractor or subcontractor activities, monitoring progress, and managing schedules.
  • Understanding of scope definition and change management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of contracts.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.

Experience

  • Typically, a minimum of 5 years of related work experience in construction management or a related field.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of increasing responsibility overseeing construction practices including heavy civil, industrial and municipal water, electrical, process mechanical, remediation, etc.
  • Experience with project scheduling (P6, MS Project) and construction management systems (Procore).
  • Experience developing project cost estimating.
  • Experience overseeing installation of electrical systems such as SCADA/I&C hardware/software.
  • Experience performing operations and maintenance activities and troubleshooting plant processes.
  • Experience with startup and commissioning of plant processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of construction practices for major wastewater projects.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work independently and in a team.
