The Senior Research and Data Visualization Specialist serves on the Education and Research Team (ERT), which addresses issues related to internal medicine education (undergraduate medical education UME and graduate medical education GME ). The team also oversees research on the discipline and profession of academic medicine through survey data collection, descriptive and exploratory analyses for data visualizations and summary reports, and comparative analyses for publication by member advisory committees/work groups.

The Senior Research and Data Visualization Specialist integrates intermediate research skills with data visualization and analytical capabilities. This position is responsible for developing and implementing frameworks (e.g., project milestones and timelines) for research studies, analyzing datasets of variable sizes and complexity, and translating findings into clear, compelling visual insights, reports, and other communications to inform stakeholders on timely issues in their profession.

This role serves as a critical bridge between Alliance survey data collection and stakeholder priorities by ensuring that results from studies of complex issues are analytically rigorous and can be interpreted by diverse audiences. The Senior Research and Data Visualization Specialist also applies independent judgment by reviewing requests for Surveys staff support and advising the Director of Survey Research on how to proceed.

Responsibilities:
Designs, plans, and manages the frameworks (e.g., project milestones and timelines for deliverables) for survey research studies and other data analysis projects from inception to completion. Develops and oversees study protocols while ensuring compliance with research ethics and data confidentiality. Coordinates the activities of cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and member advisory committees/work groups to execute research initiatives. Leads survey development processes, including pilot testing, fielding, data collection, and analyses for summary reporting, ensuring methodological rigor throughout the research lifecycle.

Serves as a primary point of contact for project stakeholders and provides periodic updates to Alliance staff and leadership. Manages quantitative datasets of varying sizes, structures, and degrees of complexity, cleaning and validity-checking results to ensure data accuracy and integrity. Conducts descriptive, exploratory, and comparative statistical analyses using data analysis software. Identifies trends, patterns, and key metrics or indicators to generate actionable insights internally and externally.

Prepares datasets as sources for Alliance member interactive data dashboard queries, reports, and visualizations, curating which content to include and updating it when appropriate. Translates analytical findings of varying degrees of complexity into intuitive visuals and narratives for technical and non-technical audiences. Similarly, applies best practices in data storytelling and visual design to communicate insights effectively. Continually evaluates and implements emerging visualization tools and techniques.

Contributes to the development of scholarly manuscripts and presentations with member-driven survey or survey question author groups. Similarly, contributes to policy briefs or organizational reporting efforts. Presents findings from data collection to stakeholders, leadership teams, and external audiences. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including other researchers and executive leadership. Facilitates member survey advisory committee meetings, developing draft agendas and ensuring follow-through on action items.
