Overview

Part-Time Clinical Psychiatrist

The City of Alexandria is hiring a part-time (20-hours/week) Psychiatrist. This position is part of a passionate team of providers (psychiatrists, nurses and pharmacy technicians), all working together to serve patients with behavioral health disorders. This position provides clinical psychiatric services to individuals with mental health, developmental disabilities and/or co-occurring substance use disorders, including psychiatric and medication evaluations, diagnosis, treatment, and emergency crisis intervention.

The position is office-based and includes wrap-around comprehensive clinical support from the Department’s clinically licensed therapists and case managers; we work as a team, have access to a wide array of ancillary supports and services, and are deeply committed to serving those most in need in the City of Alexandria.

Responsibilities
  • Provides complete and detailed psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services;
  • Uses the time allocated for initial psychiatric evaluations and medication management in a manner that will ensure therapeutic environment and safety;
  • Provides a therapeutic environment conducive to a healthy relationship between the patient and the psychiatrist;
  • Reviews patient clinical records to assure adequacy and proper prescription of medications;
  • Educates patients, family members or legal representatives regarding the nature and treatment of psychiatric illness, medications, and other treatment/rehabilitation techniques;
  • Obtains informed consent for medications in accordance with policies and procedures; and ensure patients are free to ask questions regarding medication services and any treatment options;
  • Provides individual medication services on regular basis, including following standards of care, monitoring of possible side effects and referring to outside physician when indicated;
  • Prescribes and delivers medication according to rules and regulations of the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy;
  • Maintains clear and detail correlation of all written documentation required for maintaining consumer clinical records. Prepares or signs reports in a timely manner, ensures hand written documents are legible and in accordance with safety writing procedures;
  • Ensures harmonious working relationships with co-workers, patients and others;
  • Provides crisis intervention and/or ensures flexibility to intervene on emergency situations for assigned and not directly assigned patients;
  • Provides consultation services to, and develops treatment plans with patients and staff;
  • Provides guidance and leadership with program consumers;
  • Administers medications in emergency situations;
  • Provides psychiatric services where assigned by supervisor; this means flexibility to work at the main unit, jail and/or other teams;
  • Performs related work as required.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and recent developments in psychiatry, clinical psychology, the various rehabilitation therapies and other ancillary medical services; thorough knowledge of psychopharmacology, including atypical antipsychotic agents, and the effects of psychoactive drugs; ability to diagnose, treat and give advice on the treatment of individuals with a mental illness, developmental disabilities, comorbid medical problems and/or co-occurring substance use disorder, and women during the reproductive age;
