Job Description
Job Title: Secondary - Visual Art Teacher (School-based)
Location: Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center (NCJDC), Alexandria, Virginia
Position Type: Full-Time, Licensed, 11‑month, 216 days.
Qualifications- Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field required;
Master’s preferred. - Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education teaching provisional, collegiate or postgraduate license with endorsement in Visual Arts PreK‑12, or eligibility to obtain upon hiring.
- Clearances: Criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance; tuberculosis skin test; public health compliance.
- Administers subject‑specific assessment and tests to evaluate student competencies.
- Advises parents and legal guardians of student progress, expectations, achievements, and strategies for improvement.
- Assesses progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
- Provides counseling to improve performance, health status, problem‑solving, and personal issues.
- Demonstrates required methods for classroom and subject‑specific assignments, directs assistant teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers.
- Evaluates bus routes and schedules for compliance with safety policies and guidelines.
- Instructs students in arts (crafts, drawing, painting, design) and proper use of equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Manages student behavior to create a safe, optimal learning environment and monitors students in various settings.
- Participates in meetings to convey or gather information needed for duties.
- Plans art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work.
- Prepares written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) for documentation and compliance.
- Reports incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse) to maintain safety and adhere to policies.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, and other sources and provides direction, as needed.
- Supports classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and individual student plans.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Salary determined by The ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale.
